Contact sheet

I took a variety of shots for my magazine which included both studio and location shoots. For my front cover I deceided to use the male colour shot because it looked appropriate for a front cover. i chose to use this image because i pictured where all the coverlines would go and how the colour scheme would work with the image.

as for the contents page i used both location and studio shoots to show a variety of shoots.

FINAL DRAFT OF MAGAZINE

With the comments i was given i went off to change quiet a few things around on my front cover. Firstly i removed the masthead from where it was on the right hand top corner to the left hand corner. I did this because when i looked at the different magazines i based my cased study on, all mastheads are placed on the left hand side. I also chnaged the colour scheme because the coverlines were blending in with the models clothes so i either had to make the colour lighter or darker.

My Contents page incudes an image before the full contents page so that it can link to back to the image i used.

In my contents page i resized and changed the way objects were placed so that its more clear for the target audience.

For my contents page i decided to change the questions into the colour blue so that it can it match with the modles clothing, i also corrected a few mistakes that i made on the journalism.

DPS development

at first I placed my image on the left hand side to enable the writing oto fit on the right hand side of the page and also the title of the double page spread using the same font as my front magzine cover so that it links.

I then included writing to underneath the the title using the same font so that he it can suit the genre, I aslo included the page number on both sides of the page to enable the audience to know what page they're on.

I then started writing out my journalism, I wrote the question in red so that the audience know what the whole topic of that the paragraph is about.

Later added more text to add to my journalism look for the magazine.

Finished completing my journalism piece and alligned them together so that they were straight and looked proffessional.

I then changed the font of my text to make look clear for my audience and also enlarged it as the print was too small when seen on full screen.

I then included another image underneath the title and moved the caption below it to make it more appealing, I also put in a qoute near my artists image to make it look more realistic and proffesional. In the top left corner i put in another caption/qoute for my artist. I added the name of my magazine on th top right corner to also add to that proffessionalism of the whole look of my magazine.

Near my second image I decided to include a caption to show who these people are and what they are representing to allow the audience to know.

I then went off by including graphics on the page both at the bottom and left hand side of the page

Later on I changed the colour of the font to match the colour of my artist's outfit, I did this because I looked back at my case studies and most magazines of that genre tend to match the artist outfit colour to the text used for the journalism.

contents page 2

In my own time I decided to change things up and include more to not make it look empty. I adjusted where the features went on the page, I put it up more closer to the main image on the page. I then included another image on the left bottom corner of graffiti art to link back to my genre.

contents page.

In this lesson I tried to change up the housestyle of my contents page and left it to be presented in this way. I thought by leaving it like this makes it simple and understanding for the audience to read and know where to find things.

cover page 2

In this lesson i decided to include coverline underneath the masthead to give a meaning to why my masthead is the number 40. I also then included a bigger coverline at the bottom of the page so that it could stand out from the rest.

cover page

In this lesson included all my coverlines and adjusted them to the colours appropriate with the actual image.
i made sure that the coverlines weren't blending into the image as the whole colour scheme is black and white.

Magazine proposal

Magazine Proposal
The tile of my publication is 40, reasons being because the genre of my magazine is R+B and I did some research on the date of which R+B music started and it started in the 40s. I gave the name of my title meaning although some people don’t know about when this music started so I decided to include a caption beneath the title saying “The Origins of R+B”.   The genre for my music magazine is Hip Hop/R+B.
In the magazine the contents I’ll include models representing iconic stars such as Jay-z or Kanye West.  Items included in this magazine would be props such as chairs, lipstick, scarves, and snapbacks. Some of the props will relate back to the look of the 40’s such as the way the models would be dressed, this is a code of the genre.
My magazine would include all codes and conventions of hip hop music examples would be the way the models are dressed or what they are holding, the props would conotate the genre. The mast head would be big and bold at the top left corner of the front cover, for this magazine the colour scheme would have to be black and white because it will have a significance relation with the title. It will appeal to both boys and girls from the age of 16+ who are urban and middle class.

Newsstand

A distribution of a magazine is when a set number of magazines are delivered to a retail shop to be sold, but at times the company may send over the amount that they need to so therefore the remaining magazines are sent back to the company. In this case the company looses out on money with all the costs of paying for the colour used on all pages and also for delivery.
There are other ways that institutions distribute their magazines, this could be through the internet posting their magazines online means that more people are able to access it and also read and enjoy. One example of a magazine that’s published online as well as distributed in retail shops is XXL magazine. Another way to distribute magazines is direct distribution; these magazines are given out for free in places like tube stations or working areas. The magazines are directly given to you and by doing this it enables the more people to read it compared to if its sold in shops, this benefits the audience because its free and useful.  Postal distribution is also free but it’s not guaranteed that the audience would read, this is not beneficial as the company could also loose out on money by doing this but in other cases it helps a lot of people as they don’t have to go all the way to the shop, this could make the target market feel at ease or have that sense of feeling special.
Online distribution is the highest method used in many companies lately. Many people use smart phones so therefore they are able to access the internet. Some magazine may have pin barcodes for those who use Blackberry’s by doing this automatically gets the user on the site f the magazine. For other phones they may include apps only for their type of phone. This is easy and better for the environment because they don’t have to waste or recycle the papers but simply come out from the site.

audience feedback (college magazine)

Task4: Audience feedback and Evaluation (college magazine)
I was given the task to create a cover page and contents page for a magazine based on my college. The purpose of this magazine is to inform and show students of the latest news around the college. I started off by drawing a rough draft of how I imagined my front cover and contents page would look like by including notes and writ down what would be included in those empty boxes I drew.
I started off by taking a duo shot of a boy and girl for the front cover of the magazine; I decided to take a duo shot because I wanted to include both a boy and a girl so it would appeals to both males and females in the college, the shot used for this picture was a mid-shot from the chest so it doesn’t it doesn’t distract the audience on what the models on the cover are wearing but instead what’s on the page. I later moved onto taking pictures of different facilities in the college such as the library and gym. Some of the pictures were wide shots to show what’s happening around the room. For the pictures taken I used a Cannon 12mmp compact camera. I took these pictures to show the latest news around the college and to show the facilities available for the students.
In the process of making my cover page and contents page I think what went well was arranging everything on the page as I knew where I would place everything on the page so I managed to do that quick and well. Taking pictures around the college was fairly easy as I knew which shots I wanted to use and the reasons for it. The font and size of the masthead on the page was tricky because the picture taken for my front cover took up most of the space on the cover, so therefore I had to place my masthead on the left top hand corner and this had to be big and bold so that the target market knows what it’s about.
Using Photoshop was difficult as I have used it previously for other work, but at times moving the text and image where I wanted it on the page was difficult because I had to change the mouse on the toolkit for it to move apart from that, everything else went well. The contents page also went well because I followed the guidelines of my drawing although I did re-arrange certain things, for example where the picture would go on the page.
Overall what I need to improve on is the way I structure the cover lines on my cover, making sure I know which colours would suit the audience and what kind of style of writing would be appropriate for the target market taking into consideration that not everyone is the same so therefore I have to make suitable for the whole of LSC students. In this case I didn’t take this into consideration and used different fonts and sizes on my cover page; this is something I would improve.
Another thing that I need to improve on is the context of my writing, sometimes I would go off and write informally because I know this would suite the target market but I also need to be aware that teachers and other member s of staff would want to read it so therefore I have to keep everything in formal language to suit everyone that reads it.
For my music magazine:
·         I will write in formal language to suit my chosen target audience and also for the benefit of those who are not my intended target audience.
·         I would include female and male on my cover page so that it appeals to all genders.
·         I will also use unisex colours because I will use two opposite genders I have to include colours that match them both.

media kit/case studies

People such as 50cent has been around for a long time and has been involved in films and adverts as well as music itself. This may be another reason why most males are attracted by these magazines because there is a connection between them and the rappers that they know.

These two celebrities are also well known icons in the music industry that also appeal to target audience. By using well know artists on the cover page attracts the consumers to take a look.

analysing the contents page

Analysing music mag (cover and DPS)

Analysing music magazine

Analysing music magazines

Contents page analysis:

In this NME magazine there is one page used for the content which includes different storylines about music artists.

The editorial items are listed in just some of the pages in the magazine, as for the rest their titles have not been mentioned in the contents page.

There nine sections in the contents page which all include music artists that are in that genre of rock/indie music, this is noticeable by the pictures used at the front.

The sections have been divided in 3 parts which are all aligned to make it clear and understanding for their target audience.  Furthermore the pages go in order of how it’s written on the content page, this makes it easy for the audience to follow and know where everything is.

The textboxes and captions go along with the picture used which shows that it’s all in order of how it’s arranged and how it looks on the page which is presentable for the audience to look at.

Pictures of different music artists are used on the page and there are different ways of how the pictures are shot. There are various ways of the ways the pictures have been shot, in the middle of the page there’s the use of long shot of two men in mud which also includes their surroundings. This would pull the audience’s attention because its caption says “Festival survey” the word festival does not match with the picture so therefore people would want to know what it’s about.

Another shot that’s been used is mid-shot this is a shot taken from above the waist to the head. This is seen on the bottom left corner, this picture includes three men standing close together. There is also another type of shot which is a close up shot on the right hand side; a close up shot is taken from above the shoulder to the head top.

The connotations used are pictures of music artists who are all male, also in one of the pictures there is a use of a guitar used which if to denotate would suggest that it links with the whole genre of rock, its more cost effective to if they used for example a trumpet which wouldn’t link with the whole purpose of its look to their audience.

In the contents page the listings mentions the artists or about the artist in the images so therefore this creates a link between the two.  For example image 27 talks about John Lennon and it includes his image with it too so the audience familiarise themselves with him.

The front cover reflects the contents page as it includes what was said in the contents page, we know this because the images used on the front cover have also been used in the contents page for example John Lennon is highlighted as a figure on both pages.

The article talks about John Lennon’s career and becoming a protest leader. The profile of John Lennon’s autobiography in sectored in four parts. The first sector is shown to be the beginning, the second and third is middle and the last section is the end.  There’s also a caption used in the article to clearly present Lennon’s quote between the second and third sections of the autobiography.

The sort of tone and mood used in this article is very low as though a man is speaking, moreover it also sounds like a story which is being told by a lady/woman. This article suits the target audience effectively because it uses terminology which other people who are not the target audience wouldn’t understand for example Lennon quotes “I’m happy- The only blots are violence….”  The word “Blots” would only be understood by the intended audience, people such as me wouldn’t know what the meaning is as I don’t listen to such music.  Also with that it could be said that the words that have been used is sociolect meaning only a specific group of people which is their targeted audience.  The colours used in this DPS are very dull, this helps compliment the article to make it look old.  John Lennon is an old man who makes money through his music; he has also been through a lot such as trying to bring people together through his music and being a protest leader. Using dull colours makes the article look old which work well together.

Resarch on illegal file sharing

Illegal file sharing is destroying the music industry!!!!

Is it? Is it really destroying the industry?

To begin with what is File sharing, as some of may be aware that when we hear a specific single by an artist we like we tend to log onto our laptops/computer to download that tune. File sharing would be peer-to-peer networking caused by people distributing or providing access to information downloaded or copied to other people, such as computer games, multimedia (audio, videos, and images).  We all know that file sharing has been around for a while now since the 1980s, in 1997 the Hotline enabled users to communicate remotely through chat and exchange file.  At this rate file sharing will continue to progress in today’s society if we don’t make a step forward.

Many would disagree to the idea that file sharing ruins the music industry but instead it helps the undiscovered talents be seen into different parts of the world. Moreover some agree that file sharing does affect the music industry as it obliterates the presentation of how that single or album is to deliver itself to people. According to recording association of America illegal file sharing is theft. “File sharing robs songwriters and recording artists of their livelihood and it also undermines the future of music itself”, quotes Cary Sherman, RIAA president of USA.  There are over a thousand software’s used by people around the globe and a huge amount of them are used illegally.

So what exactly is the music industry doing about this? It is seen as though not much is being done as there are still millions of people downloading music and sharing them illegally. By not making a move this causes more and more people to think that downloading music of the internet for free is “okay”.

WRONG! There were 129billion tracks downloaded illegally in the year of 2010, and till today it’s risen even higher. We don’t really think when we do such things, its only because we are receiving what we need for free into our phones MP3;s etc but this is costing the government as well as the music industry a lot of money.  A man stated “Why don’t they block all the different software that allows the people to download music or any other multimedia off their computers/laptops”, this man did not want to be identified and also said “File sharing seems to be selling more to people for free then CD’s, DVD’s sells to people for a price”.

Many have exclaimed that if the music industry does want to make money they should put a stop to this by either blocking the sites or automatically make people pay when downloading music. Moreover some have specifically mentioned that without file sharing there would be no way forward in discovering different kinds off music that are out there and supporting the music industry.

Statically it is said that file sharing does not interrupt with the music business industry, 50Cent (a rap artist) claims that it doesn’t hurt the artist as she/he still makes money from live shows, concerts, merchandise etc. YouTube is a good way to get fans on your side when singles or albums come out and this also motivates and shows the artists the kind of support they need they need in order to do better.

Downloading helps the people to explore new different kinds of music. Many think that file sharing should be a way of discovering new things such as new movies and also get ideas to motivate them to make or develop their own.

So the question is why is nothing being done about this? That’s a question we are all left wondering…. Questions, Questions and more Questions!

Downloads have affect on sales which is statistically from zero. It is said file sharing is the primary reason for the recent decline in music sales, reducing the financial cost of obtaining music and so on.

Did you know that every week there are more then 1 BILLION downloads of music! This participates to the financial lost in the music industry.  The consequence for this is paying back for the damage.

This article tells us about a woman that was charged for the case of file sharing.  This is how some us may end up if we either don’t change the software that we use or stop file sharing on whole.  There is much more other software such as “RealPlayer” which are legal to use when in need to download music files. The consequences are harsh so its either we find another way of downloading our files legally or face up to the charges.

I believe that file sharing be taken advantage of by the music industry because they can create ideas that would benefit them as well as the population that use different software’s such as “Kazaa”. They can help themselves by getting people to comment and view their music for a price affordable for everyone in that case no one is loosing out, moreover there is service called iTunes which is isn’t legal but allows people download files for a price but yet this isn’t enough to help the music industry.

On a whole many people have their reasons for whether file sharing is good or bad but we will never know what’s being done about it until it actually happens.

File sharing is not just a danger to the music industry, but now even to things such as publishing industry, tons of PDF files and online based novels and audiobooks are being downloaded. If you were an artist would you find it fair to have your music stolen? Most people in this case would answer ‘no’, this is something you’ve worked and put all your effort on and simply people feel free to come and rip that off.

Evaluation

Evaluation

During the process of finding different sources of information about file sharing, I used Wikipedia to give me a brief outline of what it meant by illegal file sharing. To begin with I highlighted and wrote a couple notes and comments on the task sheet to remind me of what I could research about. The sources that I used were the internet, my peers and also a text book from the library. I couldn’t really put in much of my peers comments on my work as they weren’t reliable or strong to back up what I was writing about but I decided to put them into my own words and change it up a little.

I looked up onto the BBC website which I found really reliable as it included information which could back up what I write in my journalistic piece such as facts and figures. The information which helped the most was the BBC info because it included trustworthy things that I used in my journalistic piece. The information I didn’t find so reliable was from Wikipedia as it weren’t all correct although it did briefly outline basic points about file sharing alone. Wikipedia is not a reliable source to use as it has been changed by different people and their various opinions.

I found that finding good source of information challenging as it had to obtain the right things to use in my journalism piece. In my journalistic writing included words such as plural pronouns to show that I’m giving my opinion. I also included rhetorical questions to get my audience thinking about the topic. The structure for my journalistic piece is set to be clear and understanding for my target audience.  I inserted two pictures of an artist that I mentioned in my writing. For those who don’t know the artist is by name then by using a picture might help remember.

Whilst using In-design I noticed that there tools that I’ve come across before. Tools such as crop cut and paste, including inserting pictures using the ruler provided. I’m able to use Photoshop but not so well but in this case the programme was different and fairly easier to use. My strengths were using the tools on In-Design as well as the programme itself; moreover my weakness was trying to research valuable information to go into my writing, also on top of that I tried to use different sources to look for my information such as using a text book but that wasn’t really successful because I didn’t try.

When trying to insert certain pictures the internet went down a couple of times, and sometimes the picture would either be too small or big for the placement on In-Design. Making blogger on the other hand was complicated but after a while I got into the hand of it as I pictured it to be like my email account. Overall blogger is also fairly easy to use.

Comments:

Peer1:  the background colour works well; it’s not too dark or bright.

Peer2: enough information given on the page, good use of language to suit the target audience.

Peer3: the pictures are not too big or small, suits the writing.

Improvements:

I think in order to improve my work I would like to put an interview of an artist talking about the situation; this could bring the audience in especially if the artist is well known. Another thing that I need to improve on is the structure because I believe that I don’t have a clear beginning, middle and end, moreover maybe use another artist which disagrees with it all because not all artists feel the same way. Overall I’m happy with the work produced.
